SENSITIVE SKIN & ANTI-AGING TIPS FOR SPRING
Traditionally Spring starts on the 1st February, which is only a week away. It may start then but it’s only towards the end of February do we start to see the season begin to change. These changes in the weather and in the seasons can play havoc on your skin, particularly those with sensitive skin. With a new season just around the corner, now is the perfect time to reassess your beauty regime.
With sensitive skin, you have the additional challenge of finding anti-aging products that do not contain ingredients that may actually irritate your skin further. In this blog we will show some do’s and don’ts to help you to nourish and treat your sensitive skin this spring.
You are not alone in trying to find suitable products that help you fight aging, while still nourishing your skin. Reactive skin is more common than you might think and some of the causes can be stress, exposure to UV rays, cold weather weakening your skin’s natural barrier and harsh ingredients in the products that you are currently using. Read on for some tips on what to do and watch out for, to help you assess and build a better skincare regime.
1. Try to avoid fragrances.
Fragrance is a common ingredient that causes reactions. According to Nebraska dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon Joel Schlessinger, MD., for Elle, it’s possible that fragrance “may even be the root cause of your sensitivity.” Because fragrance doesn’t have any benefits for your skin, you’re better off avoiding it completely.
Take note that “unscented” is not the same as fragrance-free. Unscented simply means that the company has added additional ingredients to cover up the product’s actual scent.
2. Stop using problem products.
I know it might be hard to throw out expensive products, but your everyday formulas may actually be causing allergic reactions, dryness and inflammation. In fact, for many women, product sensitivity is a major cause of reactive skin. If you’re using anti-aging products, there’s a good chance that the active ingredients, or certain additives, are too harsh. For example Glycolic Acid, Chemical Sunscreen ingredients or Benzoyl Peroxide.
3. Use products from the same line.
To effectively treat sensitive skin, Jennifer Linder, MD, clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, tells Oprah that using a series of products from the same product line can yield better results. By mixing product lines, you might be choosing several products that are too strong. Purchase an introductory set of sensitive skin products, which ensures the products
4. Examine your cosmetics.
Makeup can also be a cause of irritation, look to use cosmetics without harsh ingredients, that don’t contain alcohol, comodogenic petroleum based oils, chemical dyes or artificial fragrances
5. Build a better regimen for you.
It’s important to first address your skin sensitivities. In fact, stress and inflammation — two by products of sensitive skin — can cause skin to age more quickly. According to Amy Wechsler, M.D., for Whole Living, the free radicals produced by inflammation can break down collagen and potentially expedite the aging process. Don’t know where to start? There are several ingredients that help to calm and soothe reactive skin. Look for oil based natural cleansers with ingredient such as Seabuckthorn, Acai, Calendula, Apricot and Acai Oils, Vitamin E and Rosehip.
6. Make positive lifestyle changes.
Make positive lifestyle changes. Your daily habits are very important to great skin. Not eating a balanced diet, not drinking enough water, exposing skin to harsh environmental conditions without protection, using water that is too hot when showering or bathing and even the everyday household products you choose can all contribute to irritated skin.
Just because you have sensitive skin does not mean that you can’t use skincare products that tackle anti-aging. As spring approaches over the next few weeks, take the time to examine your daily skincare routine, your lifestyle, what is causing you stress.
